Introduction to Geometric Knot Theory

Elizabeth Denne (Harvard)

April 18, 2005

We all know how to tie some basic knots. How can we tell whether two knots are the same or different? What kind of geometric properties do knots have? How long a piece of rope do you need to tie a knot? This talk will give some answers to these surprisingly difficult questions. No knowledge of knot theory (aside from the ability to ties one's shoelaces) will be assumed.
